AREDA is a platform for people interested in the society and culture of Eastern European countries.

One of our traditional activities constists of research and promotion of projects and local partners, which can be NGOs, committed individuals or independent media. The purpose of this research is to select local partners which have real projects, are known and respected in their countries and have goals and values which we understand. We promote such projects by addressing Swiss donors and by offering information about them to the public.

We also participate to events by other organisations, as long as the concept of those events gives us the opportunity to present our work and information to the public.

If you are on this page you probably want to see information about our projects. Below is a list of our past projects. Information about current or future projects is too volatile to be presented on this website (which is updated only 2-3 times a year) - for this please contact us directly.

Areda's role

Culturescapes 2007 - Romania

Culturescapes is a yearly culture festival based in Basel, Switzerland. Every year the focus is on a different Eastern European country. In 2007 the "guest" was Romania.

Among the various cultural attractions of the festival, Areda set an additional accent on social aspects. Enjoying culture is a different, richer experience when you know what moves a society.

From our previous project with the romanian foundation "Academia civica" we were able to invite its president, the writer Ana Blandiana. She showed a film about the Memorial Sighet and participated in a dialogue with the public about the importance of remembering after a period of totalitarianism.

Georgian cuisine at the ETH

ETH is the Federal Polytechnical Institute in Zurich, the largest technical university in Switzerland. The "Kommission für Entwicklungsfragen" is a student's association working on development aid.

At this lunch with Georgian cuisine we attempted to draw attention to the work of Georgian NGOs addressing questions of transparency of local government institutions. Leaflets informed about the projects of those NGOs. Our little lunch event had more than 100 guests.

Academia Civica - "The take away museum (Muzeul de luat acasa)"

Academia civica is the founder of the renowned "Memorial Sighet". The Memorial (official name is "The Memorial of the Victims of Communism and of the Resistance)for the victims of communism") is a unique and hugely informative place, where a lot of information about the communist repression in Eastern Europe is gathered. Thus the Memorial plays a prominent role for the society's endeavour of keeping an objective, scientifical record of the past.

The Memorial is composed of a museum, a historical research institute and a yearly summer school.

This project contributed to finance the production of a CD-ROM containing the information contained in the museum and the archives of the institute.

Liga Pro Europa - "Academia Interculturalã Transsylvania 2004"

This project contributed to the mutual understanding between different ethnic and religious communities in Transylvania. This region in central and NW-Romania has been home to various communities during centuries. Unfortunately this history has not allways been a peaceful one and the record of mutual mistrust stretches up into the very recent past. One way to break this pattern is to better know the culture, history and values of the other communities living next door.

This project was aimed at drawing attention to the positive value of such a multicultural legacy.
